Managers achieve goals by working and interacting with people in order to motivate them. They also inspire a shared vision and appeal to people’s values and motivate them to care about the corporate goals or an important mission.
Review the “Penelope at Work – A Lesson on Professionalism” video in your lecture and discuss the following:
- In your opinion, did Penelope’s boss manage the situation effectively? What would you have done the same or different?
- In what ways did Penelope violate professional etiquette and why? Why is professionalism important in the workplace?
- How do you think a manager can motivate someone like Penelope to care more about the company mission and goals?
Remember to be specific! Then provide thoughts and feedback on one other student’s post. How were your thoughts and ideas similar or different? Is there any new information that you can share with them or a resource that you can route them to?
I feel that Penelope ‘s boss manages the situation effectively, but I think it could have been better. What I would do differently was I would have given. Penelope should be giving a job description of her duties along with the company policies with a verbal warning on her behavior. Professionalism is essential in the workplace for several reasons because of reputation; professional standards proper etiquette can sometimes protect the atmosphere of the company.
I think a good manager sets an expectation for the department and follows up to make sure things are how they should be. Maybe the boss should take classes. Also when meetings are mandatory, it should be enforced emails sent out, and meetings should be posted on the information broad the boss mention she missed the important meeting action was taken and her coming into work improperly dressed, maybe Penelope etiquette is not addressed, so she thinks it okay
