Purpose: To analyze a text using rhetorical analysis in a well-reasoned essay.

Task: You will choose a video (no print ads) commercial to analyze in your essay. You will need to carefully view your text in order to determine what it says, how what it says works, and what it means. That is, you will dissect the primary argument in the text and use your knowledge of rhetoric to analyze its meaning. You will provide your analysis in your essay, making sure to provide a clear thesis and support.

Questions to consider:

  • Getting started: What is the most interesting part of the text to you? What stands out as intriguing or potentially ripe for analysis?
  • Purpose/argument: What is the writer’s purpose? Is the purpose stated explicitly or implicitly? How or in what way is this done? What is he or she trying to accomplish? What argument is the author using to accomplish this goal?
  • Audience: Who is the intended audience? Age, gender, socioeconomic status, etc. Is the writer addressing one group of readers or more than one? What kind of relationship is the author trying to create with the readers? How can you tell who the audience is by what the text says?

Below are some of the things you might consider in your analysis:

  • Tone/Context: What is the writer’s tone? What is the context of the text? How do these two things work to support the writer’s goals?
  • Support/Details: What does the writer’s word choice reveal? Or, what details are evident visually that work to support the argument? Make note of specific details that the writer uses to support the main purpose (color, shapes, images, focal point, etc).
  • Rhetorical appeals: How does the writer use ethos, pathos, and logos to help communicate his/her message? And, if relevant, what logical fallacies are apparent in the argument, and do they help or hinder the success of the writer’s message?

Important Features:

  • Make sure you summarize your text early in your essay, so your reader is familiar with the text before you provide your analysis. However, this summary should not be your introduction; it will most likely make sense to place this description after the introduction and thesis.
  • A strong thesis will be important for this essay.

Format Requirements:

  • 750-1200 words. Essays should be typed, double spaced, 1” default margins, Times New Roman, font size 12
  • Follow APA format for heading and running header
  • You will bring in a hard copy of your draft to share with your peers on February 13. First drafts will be submitted on Canvas by midnight, February 20.
  • If you receive a grade of 44/50 or lower, you have the option of rewriting and submitting a final draft on Canvas one week after you receive your first draft back from me with comments. A change in grade will only result from significant changes to the paper (not just grammatical revision) and a revision memo as detailed below.
  • You will include a revision memo with your final draft (it can be the final page of the document, following the References page). Use 150-200 words to detail the changes you did or did not make after the peer review, our conference, and the return of the first draft.
  • Please see the rubric I will use for grading below.
