Moore the first I/O in 1921 approached by Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company to solve a problem of not knowing if a new employee should be placed in engineering sales or design (Levy, 2013). Moore found the importance to find the interests of the employee since this played a part of success (levy, 2013). Later, Moore’s work was broadened by String and then Campbell which eventually formed the Strong Vocational Interest Blank for Men followed by the Campbell Interest and Skill Survey that assisted high school and college students (Levy, 2013). Then, Frederick Taylor came along to implement motivation at work which was named Scientific Management where he focused on financial reward for workers (Levy, 2013). Lillian and Frank Gilbreth continued on this work but focused on the employee’s well-being neglecting Scientific Management (Levy, 2013). Experiments followed known as the Hawthorne Studies during the Great Depression and the focus turned to the human condition when researchers found that social and psychological conditions were more significant than physical conditions (Levy, 2013). Team development, supervision, group process, worker morale, and other phenomena were then birthed into I/O (Levy, 2013). World War II created another place for I/O back in the military to coordinate the job and the recruit (Levy, 2013). The civil rights movement came next that opened another door for I/O in the workplace to deal with discrimination along with creating more and new programs at Universities (Levy, 2013). Lastly, today I/O focuses on selection, performance appraisal, motivation, and leadership along with newer domains (Levy, 2013).
