Business Lesson Plan

LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT – LEADERSHIP CONSULTANT ANALYSIS

Note: All scenarios in this assignment are fictional.

Real Business

It can be difficult for a business to improve how it operates from
inside the organization. Sometimes, an outside perspective is needed.
The large discount retail store you work for wants to improve its
in-store restaurant management team.

Your Role

Companies like Target and Walmart often work with outside
consultants—people who are not employees of the company but who are
hired on a contract basis to help with a specific project. As a
Leadership Consultant, you’ve been hired by a large discount retail
company to help the company improve its leadership structure and
approach to management.

WHAT IS A LEADERSHIP CONSULTANT

A leadership consultant is a person called in to a company, be it a
large corporation or a small business, to evaluate how it operates and
make recommendations for improvement. Leadership consultants are
typically hired when a business is struggling and needs to make changes
in order to remain profitable. Such consultants are often highly
educated in the field of business and have experience in managerial
roles.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step1 Organizationl Structure

Take a look at the Organization Chart provided by the company.

  • Based on your knowledge of hierarchies, would you say that this team
has tall structure or flat structure? Explain your answer in 1-3
    sentences.

Step 2: Human Resources

The company would like to improve the culture of its team and the
quality of its work. Its leadership has provided you with a Process
Chart detailing how it currently applies Human Resources best practices.

  • What step of the Human Resources Cycle is missing? In 2-5 sentences,
explain why it is important to include this part of the process.

STEP 3: Leadership Style

You have been asked to help improve the leadership style of the team
leader in order to meet the team’s performance goals. The team leader
has given you a description of what is most comfortable in terms of
leading others.

  • Identify this leader’s style of leadership, and list two benefits and
two drawbacks to that style as it relates to the performance of the
    team.

data sources would you need to achieve this?
  d. Who are the key decision makers in relation to this issue?  What arguments will you use to get them to attend the meeting?
  e. How will you structure the agenda of the meeting? What would be the best way of doing this so that people who attend on that day have
  appropriate buy-in to it?
  f. How would you run the actual meeting?
  g. What technology would you need to make it work well?
  h. What would you like people to take away from the meeting?
   i. What follow-up actions would you plan to ensure that actions and decisions flowed from it?
  j. What possible funding sources might you draw on to finance the meeting?
  k. As a result of considering such questions, what new issues emerge for you, as a large-scale change intervention agent, to consider? What
specific skills would you need to make such an event work well? Which of these skills would you need to develop more?

Complete 4 short Business Discussions with 150 words EACH

MUST HAVE AT LEAST 150 WORDS EACH AND 1 REFERENCE

PLEASE SEPARATE EACH DISCUSSION

DISCUSSION1:

Planning

Discuss why planning is essential to an organization as well as some ramifications for organizations that fail to plan.

DISCUSSION 2:

Job Cost Sheet

Question A

  • Provide and discuss an example of a situation where a company would use a job cost sheet. As part of your analysis, be sure to explain the nature and importance of a job cost sheet.

Question B

  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Job Order Costing. Be sure to include specific examples of the advantages/disadvantages that you discuss.

DISCUSSION 3:

To prepare for this week’s discussion, first go to YouTube and watch two videos:

  • I Love Lucy chocolate factory ()
  • Dove Evolution ()

(The above links are current; if they do not work, search for videos using the titles/key terms above.)

Now read “Lucy, You Have Some ‘Splainin’ to Do,” pp. 326-330 in The Writer’s Way.

For this discussion, think about the ways the student author, Nicole Benbow, connects something most of us are familiar with (The I Love Lucy television series) to larger issues concerning perceptions of women in the workplace. Think about how she tries to get us to see the TV series—and the larger issue—in a new way.

In your initial post, write a 75- to 150-word response in which you address the following questions:

  • What is the central point/thesis? What evidence does the author give to support this thesis? Is her argument convincing?
  • What is your reaction to this essay? Do you find Benbow’s argument convincing? Why or why not?
  • A good argument needs counterarguments. Can you think of some reasonable opposing views to Benbow’s argument?
  • Note the unorthodox structure the author employed in writing this essay. She begins with a riddle and solves it at the end. Is this an effective way to write an essay? What other rules does she “break”

DISCUSSION 4:

Week 6: Where Does the Time Go?

It’s pretty common to hear people say, “I don’t know how I am going to get this all done.” We may think we manage our time well and know how to multitask, but there are always tips and tricks that help us make the most of our time.

For example, every day after school, one mother usually waited for her son 10-15 minutes in the parking lot of the elementary school. She realized that sitting there was simply a waste of her time. She then chose to log in to her online class with her cell phone and read her textbook during this time. At the end of the week, she realized that the time in the car was 50-75 minutes of reading time!

Likewise, a father carried 10 flashcards each day in his pocket. He took 5 minutes on each of his breaks at work to review the cards. He found that he retained so much more information by taking 5 minutes here and there to review concepts. Tips like this help students balance school, work, family, and other life demands.

In this post, you will:

  1. Explain time management in your own words.
  2. Explain how a person truly knows if he or she manages time well. What evidence supports the idea that someone manages time well?
  3. Provide at least two time-saving tips that you use/ have used at school, at work, or in life, and explain how they have helped you.
  4. Explain how “I need” statements can help with time management.

Composer/Composition Review Project Paper Guildelines

Write a detailed review, following the 7-part format below. The report should be at least 1,000 words long, excluding the bibliography and glossary.

Submit your assignment by uploading a document file via the “submit assignment” link on this page. Be sure to put your name and “Composer-Composition Review Project” in the name of the file and inside the document itself.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the writing is your own. Your paper will be passed through plagiarism software.

Format to use:

1. Heading

Your name:

Name of the work selected:

2. The Composer

Include 10 relevant facts about the composer of the piece you have selected into (a) well-written paragraph(s). This could include such things as nationality, time period and culture he or she lived in, type of personality, and so on, as well as musical characteristics of the period.

3. The musical work as a reflection of the composer’s life

Include 5 relevant facts about what the composer was doing, thinking, or feeling during the time he or she wrote the music on which you are focusing. The information should relate to what was happening in the composer’s life at the time and the impact the circumstances had on the motivation for or sound of the work.

Example:

Hector Berlioz – Symphony Fantastique
1. The composer was a strange man, in that the story-line behind the piece of music involved a man who was so deeply in love with a woman that he killed her when he could not have her. In the story, the man “loved her so much that in each place he saw her face in the crowd.” Thus, a “lovers theme” appears throughout the piece as part of the storyline. (Source – Leon Plantinga, Romantic Music, pg. 208 – 214)

4. Musical Observations [Three Sections]

In three separate lists, one for each of the three sections of your choice (three different areas in the work or one from each movement (like WTC 9/11) make a list of at least 10 musical events you can distinguish and describe in the first 2 to 5 minutes of the musical excerpt, and note the time at which they occur in the sound file. Label each section: Listening Guide 1, Guide 2, and Guide 3. Watch for high points in the music and note what musical sounds help make that section unique (timbre).

Important: Use at least five of the musical terms learned in class. Boldface or underline all of the musical terms you use. (Refer to the tip sheet, “How to Describe Music,” for suggestions on the kinds of comments to make.)

5. Meaning and/or Intent of the work

Write 1-2 paragraphs about the message or intent of the work as in connects to particular concepts (different for each work.) I’ve added some links to assist the start of your research. Feel free to dig deeper.

  • November Steps, Toru Takemitsu

Address the idea of pluralism in the (Japan/European) musical fusion found in this composition. How did Takemitsu convey this pluralistic concept through this diverse musical combination heard in November Steps? Is Takemitsu’s approach to force both cutlures on top of one another or is each respected in their own musical space?

  • Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out of Balance), Philip Glass

After viewing the full film, how does Glass’s film score support the scope of the film’s message? Do you feel the style of the music connects with the images? What ideas are raised in the film and how does Glass’s music provide context to those ideas? Without the film can Glass’s film music stand alone?

  • WCT 9/11, Steve Reich

This composition was composed almost a decade after the attack on on the World Trade Center (WTC) on September, 11, 2001. WTC 9/11 speaks to a significant event through music, explain to the best of your ability what Reich is trying to convey. Use the voice recordings from NORAD in the piece and the music itself to organize your thoughts.

  • Become Ocean, John Luther Adams

Become Ocean is very much a meditation on the environment and environmental issues facing the human race. Considering the music and the quote following, devise a conclusion that connects the music to the aforementioned concepts.

“Life on this earth first emerged from the sea. Today, as the polar ice melts and sea levels rise, we humans face the prospect that we may once again, quite literally, become ocean.” ~ John Luther Adams

What was the composer trying to say or accomplish, and how is it communicated in the music?

Example:
Antonio Vivaldi – Four Seasons (Spring)
1. The music was written to depict the sights and sounds of spring.” The ones he included were birds chirping, a murmuring brook, and a summer storm, among others. Part of the fun of this piece is listening for the sounds of the orchestra that are meant to portray those images. (Source – Claude Palisca, Baroque Music, Pg 194 – 205.)

6. Bibliography

  • List all of the sources you used in any part of your report.

7. Glossary

  • List and define all of the musical terms used anywhere in your report.

Hints and Tips:

  • It will be best if you can find articles specific to the piece you have chosen, but writings on similar pieces that utilize the same sounds and/or techniques can also be helpful.
  • Finding writings on the exact piece you have chosen can be tricky. It will help to understand the full name of a piece (including any commonly used “opus numbers,” collection numbers or other identifying codes) as well of the spelling of the title and the composer.
  • The composer’s society and culture often play a major role in the development of his or her music, so reading about both can give you helpful insights into the music. Consider how the music that you hear reflects the tastes, technological advances, and perspectives of its time.
  • Good information is often provided in the CD notes or in promotional material.
