Read the arguments presented by your classmate and analyze the reasoning that they have presented. Comment on the strength of their reasoning. Help them out by pointing out any respect in which a reasonable person might disagree with the truth of their premises or with the strength of their reasoning. Give suggestions for how the argument might be improved. If someone presents good suggestions for your own argument respond with an improved version of the argument. 5 sentences or more.

Glance around a restaurant and you’ll be overwhelmed to find people who don’t have their heads down using their cell phones to text, tweet, or update their Facebook statuses, all while sharing a meal with others at a table. People around the world are curious to know if social media enhances or hinders interpersonal relationships. Personally, I know it enhances relationships because it has done so for me with family that lives far away or friends I don’t see every day. I think both arguments could be valid with the correct support, but I am going to argue that social media hinders relationships in daily life and I will tell you why.

Social media hinders relationships because even though we are still being able to communicate with people on these apps, the communication has changed so that we are not meeting face to face as often as we used to. Interactions on social media tend to be weak ties. Have you ever noticed the pop up notification on your Facebook page? It tells you the birthday of your friends on your feed? Have you noticed that most of the time, you don’t even recognize the names of the people? Exactly my point! This is why we don’t feel as personally connected to the people at the other end of a conversation as we do if it is face to face. “So while we are communicating more, we are not building relationships as strongly,” Booth has stated.

Another way social media hinders relationships is cyberbullying. In real life, if a child is being bullied, the child could remove himself or herself from the environment, at least temporarily. For example, a child being bullied could escape the playground when he or she goes home every night. “However, cyberbullying is marked by its persistence,” Bowman says.” The bullying messages don’t stay in a particular space, such as a playground, but can follow the child home. When we consider this and understand that the bullying can build over time, there becomes a real concern with the increasing contact between bullies and their targets in persistent and digital interaction. Cyberbullying has the same antecedents and behavioral, emotional and affective consequences as does (no cyber) bullying. The difference is social media allows for more contact, in a more public manner.

Lastly, a lack of privacy hinders relationships. Because of the continuous change in interpersonal communication, we find ourselves sharing on social media the sort of information we might have shared privately face to face with someone. We always need to be aware that we leave a digital footprint with whatever we post.

Therefore, I have a strong argument to as of why social media hinders relationships. My premises support this conclusion and makes it valid. Yes there are many advantages of social media but we need to be aware that social media hinders our relationships as well. Keeping these points both in mind, we can be cautious whenever we use social media apps.
